The cataclysmic events that might be occurring on the 21st of December, 2012 and the year itself have been surrounded by numerous discussions over the past few years. It is difficult to figure out who is worth listening to and who should be believed, differentiating the acts from fiction is very challenging.

As far as the possible outcomes that could take place on that particular date in the coming year, research shows that there are five major categories out of which one or more could actually occur on that date.

These possible outcomes can by strongly validated, since they are merely beliefs, claims, predictions and speculations, yet people still seem to be pretty concerned about their prominence.

Climatic Catastrophe

The fact that climatic catastrophes have been witnessed all across the world and the extent of their destruction has been clearly experienced by many. Therefore it is more plausible for the people to digest and understand that some climatic catastrophe or catastrophes will occur in the year 2012, eventually resulting in the end of the world on December 21, 2012. Some of those climatic catastrophes that could occur in the coming year include earthquakes, flooding, global warming, hurricanes, ice age, tsunamis and typhoons.

Cosmic Anomalies

Another speculation regarding a possible outcome is that the planet Earth will be completely destroyed when some asteroids, comets, space debris or wayward planets collide with it, on a seismic scale. This category can also include black holes, distortions in time/space continuum and worm holes that have been recently discovered.

Human Intervention

This category possibly speculates and indicates the possibility of a third World War in the following year. The reason that this is among major concerns is due to the fact that the Earth could be ultimately devastated because undoubtedly nations would not hesitate using nuclear force in case of such a war. Another possible outcome that is speculated is involves accidental causes that could result in a nuclear holocaust with destructive tendencies that are beyond our control. A similar possible outcome that is beyond realms of possibility is an accident in the worldwide nuclear energy plants resulting in a major catastrophe. Possible end of the world outcomes that are within the capabilities of manking include biological warfare, plague, swine flu pandemics and terrorist plots.

Religious Apocalypse

Throughout the ages turmoil has resulted due to religious fanaticism. Similarly when it comes to the end of the world speculations, different creeds, religions and tribes have their individual beliefs. The reign of the next pope is speculated to be the time when the world will end, while others relate the end of the world to the End of the Church.

Spiritual Awakening

There is in fact also a possible outcome that the end of the world is not actually the day that the world will end but a period during which the world as we know it will cease to exist. This will possibly result in Spiritual Awakening and the human race might be expected to return to the basic values.

So, you are considering what type of slurry store to build, and would like some guidance? Okay, let us get started. On one side you will find the “Pro”, the positions in favor:

The first point in support of earth bank slurry stores is going to be their simplicity of construction.

The secondary positive point is the low cost when a suitable low permeability in-situ clay soil exists on your site to use as the lining medium.

A third favorable point is that they are usually buried and below ground so that the slurry and liquids is easily drained or pushed downhill into the store by normal farm machinery and using normal tractor attachments.

A fourth big benefit is with a slightly elevated rim they quickly green-up and are visually unobtrusive.

Lastly, the fifth reason for support will be that a slurry store of this type can be an entirely farm resourced project, perhaps only requiring the services of a guy with an excavator machine, for the farm to complete.

And on the reverse side, for balance, the Con side, against:

The leading point against earth bank slurry stores is that unless well sited they may be inundated in wet weather, especially if they are within the flood plain of a river and release their contents causing pollution.

The second point against will be that with their sloping banks they may be subject to erosion and instability against collapse, unless well designed with suitably stable shallow sloping sides.

The third point against is going to be that they form their own additional rainfall catchment due to the way that the normal 750 freeboard slops out beyond the edge of the wetted perimeter, adding to the volume of slurry/ polluted water that the farm must dispose of safely.

A fourth negative point is going to be that with the gradient of their sides they take up much more farmyard space than a vertical walled slurry storage design.

Fifth and lastly, against is that the bottom of the tank is below the water table, inward seepage of water may occur, if they are not carefully designed by an expert.

So there we have all the arguments from each side.

So, in the final analysis are earth bank slurry stores the good thing, or just a bad thing?

Both questions appear to have a “yes” answer! earth bank slurry stores appears to be both good AND bad! It must be left up to you, the reader to decide. Which side, the good or the bad, has got the preponderance of weight of opinion?

Are customers in less developed countries more interested in green consumables than Americans?

Based on ImagePower Global Green Brands Survey, there is a leveling off of American consumers’ intentions to spend more on green products over the next year. Other countries such a China, Brazil and India are seeing a trend towards more spending on green products. Over 65% Chinese consumers plan to spend money on green products while 56% Brazilian consumers and 64% of Indian consumers will purchase green products this year. The survey also goes on to detail that these countries consumers are willing to spend more if needed on green products. As many as 95% of Chinese consumers will spend more on green products because they are eco-friendly.

Why are these consumers so committed to the green cause?

Specific environmental concerns in all these countries have made environment consciousness a major concern for their consumers. For example, in Brazil deforestation is the No. 1 environmental issue and in India where air pollution is visible, 61% of their consumers say the environment of their country is on the wrong track. In both countries the condition of their environment is the highest level of concern. These are concerns that other world consumers don’t generally share because they don’t see the air pollution or deforestation on a daily basis. Consumers in the developing world are more conscious because they are having personal experiences with the negative effects that consumer products are having on their environment.

This should be how marketers tactically address their marketing and positioning. It’s also important for marketers to think more globally and strategically. Consumers are savvy and getting involved personally in the cause that closely effects their lives. These consumers in many cases have had negative effects of consumption that disregards the environment. This means that these consumers are more predisposed to products that offer an eco-friendly alternative. They demand products that not only say they are eco-friendly but come through on those claims. Greenwashing has consumers avoiding them because the environmental issues are such a problem that brands need to be aware that if the claim doesn’t live up to an eco-friendly green goods it will most likely be left unpurchased. Companies need to tell the truth and produce products and services that live up to their claims. It’s also important to not only be green but communicate you are green. Talk to consumers about how you are making a difference with the products you are delivering and how you plan to continue to assure your company’s positive carbon footprint now and in the future. Involve your company in ways to give back to the efforts of improving the environment and any clean up efforts. And then taught your achievements so consumers can see how your company is contributing back.

Marketers in the US need to pay close attention to these environmental concerns in order to make a sustainability message successful. There is certainly no size fits all and each country has its own issues that consumers are most concerned with. And with the rise of those countries middle class the novelty of green products is important to them and they are willing to spend their money for them. Look at India for example, their current middle class population is larger than the US’s entire population. The companies who differentiate their products and offer eco-friendly products to these consumers will own that growing consumer market.

Saving the Environment. Ford Creates Gaskets and Mechanical Seals Out of Recycled Materials

Ford, together with their supplier Recycled Polymeric Materials (RPM), has found a way to create eco-friendly gaskets and seals for their Ford Motor Company vehicles. This was accomplished by recycling old, discarded tires, which were combined with bio-renewable content.

The mechanical seals and gaskets are comprised of 25% post-consumer particulate (this is made up of the recycled tires), 17% bio-renewable solution from soy. To come up with all the RPM seals and gaskets, over 2.2 million pounds of rubber from 210,000 tires had been recycled. In addition, 150,000 pounds of soy was used to produce the materials, according to Ford.

Aside from helping save the environment, this green-oriented move from Ford also helped improve the performance of many Ford automobiles. The seals allowed Ford vehicles to be lighter as the seals removed 1,675 tons of weight from the cars.

The technology of sustainable gaskets was initially introduced to Ford in the year 2008. As of today, 11 vehicles have been manufactured with these recycled materials. The 11 Ford Motor Company cars that feature the gaskets and seals are:

Lincoln MKS

Ford F-150

Ford F-250

Ford F-350

Ford Escape

Ford Flex

Ford Fiesta

Ford Focus

Ford Mustang

Ford Transit Connect

Ford Taurus

Other Eco-Friendly Acts Aside from Renewable Gaskets

As stated by Ford, their commitment to “reduce, reuse and recycle” is in line with the company’s broader goal to promote global sustainability and strategies for reducing environmental pollution.

According to Dr. Cynthia Flanigan, technical leader in research and innovation, Ford and its suppliers consider each and every part of a vehicle when it comes to using more recyclable and renewable material. She added that Ford will continue making environment-friendly vehicles and car parts as long as their strategies and materials meet quality standards and application of renewable content makes sense.

Another Ford representative, Dr. Debbie Miewlewski (the technical leader in plastics), said that Ford’s team of experts constantly develops innovative technologies that help save the planet and reduce environmental footpring. In fact, the company has seen success in integrating soy from seats on all of its North American automobiles. The company is also expanding its research fields to discover more ways to use rubber and plastic materials in an environmentally responsible way.

It is worth noting the car maker announced in April this year that it had manufactured cylinder head covers out of 41 million pounds of carpet.

The models Ford Fusion, Mustang, Escape, and F-150 are all fused with EcoLon. This is a nylon resin created completely out of recycled carpet. Two other companies contributed in the making of the material. Wellman Engineering Resins produces the material, and then Dana Holding Corporation turns the material into the cylinder head covers.

By April, the recycling and production process resulted into an expanse of carpet equal to almost 154 football fields. The process also prevented the usage of over 430,000 gallons of oil.

With these efforts at cleaning the planet, it’s surely a good idea if all automakers use gaskets and other renewable content.

New and innovative ways to handle your relocation and keep your co2 emissions to a minimum. Did you know that the average American's carbon impact is 20 tons of carbon dioxide a year?

Did you know that the average American’s carbon impact is 20 tons of carbon dioxide a year? Liquid fossil fuels alone account for 36% of the world’s CO2 emissions. That’s more than a third coming from our transportation!

Reducing your carbon footprint on your move is easier than you think. By taking these simple steps, you’ll not only reduce the amount of harmful gas entering our atmosphere, you’ll feel better knowing that you did.

Before even hitting the road, check your tire pressure. Vehicles running on under-inflated tires waste more energy and can contribute up to 1.5 tons more carbon dioxide emissions than properly inflated tires. You’ll get the most out of your mileage, over a 3% boost, and in turn save yourself up to $500 a year with regular tire pressure check-ups.

Avoid the lead foot. If you have the propensity to be an aggressive driver, stop yourself. Improve your mileage on your move by about 33% just by being a passive driver. Take it easy on the accelerator by using the cruise control function of your car, if you have one.

Lower the windows. A study done by the Society of Automotive Engineers found that car windows that were lowered at speeds of up to 65mph maximized fuel efficiency. Anything higher increased drag and lowered fuel efficiency on a vehicle. A good rule of thumb is if you’re 45mph or under, lower your windows.

Tell your movers not to use a shuttle. If you’re hauling over to your new home with professional movers that have shuttle services, tell them you prefer to have the moving truck come to your home instead of shuttling your stuff back and forth.

Ask your moving company what they do for greener relocation. Although bio-diesel movers are in their infancy, there are current movers that employ green moving tactics, such as the ones listed above, that cut down their CO2 emissions. It’s a smart move for movers because it also saves their company money on fuel costs. If the moving company you choose doesn’t have a green plan, merely suggesting it will propel their attention to the burgeoning demand for greener relocation services.

Use these tips on your next move for a less pollution-inducing relocation. If you’re interested in knowing what your annual CO2 contribution is, check out the EPA’s Household Emissions Calculator.

MovingCost.com is your ticket to find professional movers for all of your relocation needs. Each of the moving services that our team of moving companies perform is customized and individually planned to be stress-free.

Within this past century the capitalist economy we live in has increased our way of life. It's also allowed us to make big technological advances.

Over the past one hundred years the capitalist economy we live in has improved our way of living. It’s enabled us to progress itself through the years. The free market has provided us with the resources to travel the globe, to give us products beyond our wildest dreams and to build great cities. The free markets accurately reflect the supply & demand within our nations. It allows us to price everything from agriculture to medicine. Capitalism effectively prices even our most valued resources.

However despite all of our humanities achievements. capitalism fails to recognize the impact global warming has on earth due to carbon emissions. Ever since the 1950′s co2 in our atmosphere has risen to 300%. According to actual scientific data. Direct climate emissions is to blame for global warming.

The recent change in global temperature has had negative impacts on our world. It has melted away the polar ice caps, destroyed wildlife and has created more powerful tropical storms. Sea levels globally have risen to 4-8 inches with the past 100 years and global warming could eventually lead to an underwater Manhattan. So is it possible to use capitalism our primary tool to solve global warming our #1 problem.

Currently people have little motivation to change their life-style to help the earth. So why not use our money?

Which is humanities #1 motivation tool- Introducing Carbon Credits Explained. Carbon credits are these finical instruments that represent a reduction of carbon emissions into our atmosphere. These carbon credits via a carbon tax place a monetary price on our populating activities. People can earn more on carbon credits because there is money/rewards to be earned by reducing co2 emissions. also by trading these carbon credits we can use market forces to reduce carbon emissions at the lowest cost for society.

This is how a carbon tax works? When co2 is burned to produce energy it also releases pollution. A “limit” on certain carbon emissions will make companies want to use less pollution because it will cost them less. It will be in their best interest to minimize global warming via carbon emissions because it will produce a carbon tax for that particular business and the U.S. will break free of its oil addiction. This carbon cap will ensure that we as a society do not go over the limit and should set the USA on a course of energy independence.

So will carbon tax and carbon credits work? Many environmentalist like this idea of tackling there problem that their agenda have pursued for so long, but many economist don’t think the economics add up. Many critics say its just a scheme to get the developing world down (i.e. India, China, Brazil, etc.). Where as in these nation there’s very little luxury of being able to go green in the 3rd world.

Some businesses have already created such trading systems to reduce global warming. The Chicago climate exchange is the world’s first one and the USA only trading exchange for carbon credits. With the international adoption of trading standards we can finally begin to acknowledge and account for the environmental impact of our progress.

Is the world ready for green technology?

The world experienced a sudden shift in green technology awareness following the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The double tragedy caused various malfunctions on several nuclear power plants that were operating in the hardest-hit region of the country. Fukushima Dai-ichi is one of the oldest nuclear reactors in Japan, that was severely damaged by the same catastrophic earthquake and tsunami that also wiped out several villages and towns in less than a day. The nuclear reactor produced discouraging reports of average-to-extreme radiation leaks, that had the potential to affect anyone within a wide area.

Nuclear Crisis

Looking back at the tragic earthquake and tsunami that ruined properties and resulted in massive number of deaths in Japan; while at the same time, the world glimpsed on how the resulting nuclear fiasco played right into the fine lines of the many benefits of green technology and it’s disadvantages. For many who are still against nuclear technology, the catastrophic release of high levels of radiation to the environment, especially its high concentrations in the surrounding area near the nuclear reactors, presented a glaring testament to the risks of nuclear technology regardless of the advancements and safety measures already in place. However, in retrospect, we can only surmise if Japan had been able to rapidly jump through the ranks among the world’s most economically competitive countries, had they not wholeheartedly embraced nuclear technology, that powered, and continues to provide for its millions of citizens.

The Benefits of Nuclear Energy

Among the green renewable technologies today, nuclear energy presents a cost-efficient investment that is pulling a lot of demand among consumers and manufacturers. The United States, France and Japan are but among the several nations in the World who are pushing for a safer and more responsible use of nuclear power. These countries are also among the biggest beneficiaries of nuclear energy. The fact that the whole of Japan is getting more than 30% of its power from its nuclear reactors, has encouraged many countries to embrace the use of nuclear technology, as a clean and as an efficient means to generate electric power for a considerably large number of homes.

The Disadvantages of Nuclear Technology

However, just like any form of energy, there are also trade-offs with nuclear technology worth noting. Nuclear power comes at the risk of high levels of radiation. There is also the possibility of nations turning their benign nuclear technology into a military-funded nuclear weapons program. In defense of nuclear technology however, it’s closest competitor, which are fossil fuels and solar energy, can’t provide the same level of output power as nuclear reactors. Fossil fuels also produce various airborne components harmful to the human body, including carbon dioxide, which is one of the leading greenhouse gasses.

Many environmentalists believe that greenhouse gasses are among the leading factors pushing climates and weather patterns to change worldwide.

Embracing green technology, or any type of new technology for that matter, will always have risks tied with them. Consumers will always have to walk a tightrope and make several compromises, with the best and most efficient sources of fuel, available today. When nuclear technology is made safer and the radiation properly sealed from the environment, only then, can the world truly understand and measure its benefits.

In your own little way you can help this planet by using green technology, or making sure your vehicles run properly, with less carbon emissions if possible. Use quality car engine oil regularly to prevent car failures along the road.

It seems you can not go a month in the UK without hearing the latest horror story of electrical waste (WEEE) being stopped at the ports in containers for exportation. Companies and individuals believe that when they recycle their old electrical equipment it is destined for reuse or material level recycling. But that is not always the case.

If you type the phrase “electrical waste exportation” into your search engine you will read some of the stories that have recently made the news. Within the WEEE directive the emphasis for recycling is lower in priority than reuse, if the item works reuse it, if it doesn’t break it down to its raw materials. However non working equipment has been found destined for exportation that is the problem. Such equipment will contain hazardous components, harmful to the environment and the people that will probably strip the equipment by hand. The UK has the technology to recycle non working equipment in a safe and environmentally friendly way, so non working equipment must be processed in the UK without exportation!

The reuse of working equipment within the UK is great, and it’s practical to find a new home for something that is in demand. For example newer IT equipment can be reused in schools, charities etc.. This is a good idea we all say, however, with working items also being shipped abroad, what happens when that working piece of equipment no longer works in another country? The chances are the item will end up in a undeveloped country where recycling technologies, environmental laws and health safety are not as regulated as that of the UK and Europe. The equipment may well be stripped by hand at the end of its life, including the hazardous components for refining the materials out of them. I would feel a social responsibility to ensure i knew where my equipment was ending up however others do not have that same thought.

Companies and individuals that are clearing out their IT storage room (for example) need to do their homework on the company that they are using for their recycling. Any legitimate recycling company in the UK, will be registered with the Environment Agency to either carry, store, sort or treat waste, depending on their activities. When first discussing a recycling collection, ask to see a copy of their waste carriers license, ask them where the equipment will end up and the recycling process. You should be given duty of care paperwork that will follow the equipment on each part of its journey, whether for reuse or for material recovery recycling. You have a legal obligation to know where your equipment ends up. For example say you had some equipment collected by a recycling company that then fly tipped the equipment near by. The environment agency may investigate the equipment, trace it back to you and then prosecute you for not disposing of the equipment in a legal and friendly way. You do have a clear responsibility!

I hope to see the day when we don’t hear any type of waste being exported illegally especially electrical waste. We all have a responsibility to dispose of any type of waste in an ethical manner regardless of what it is. If companies and individuals took the time to investigate the company they were thinking of using to recycle their WEEE waste, the majority of these horror stories would not happen. Take your time, do your homework and recycle, recycle, recycle.

Before you can export plastic and or other scrap material to China, foreign enterprises must first register with the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People’s Republic of China, or AQSIQ for short. This is the governmental department established to ensure that all cargo entering China complies with rules, laws and regulations.

The largest issue companies face when registering for AQSIQ certification is that all submitted information must be written in Chinese. If you’re not familiar with the Chinese language, the best way is to get assistance from a third-party AQSIQ registration company.

There are a total of 17 documents needed for the AQSIQ registration process:

The Provisional Registration of Overseas Supplier Enterprises of Imported Scrap Materials application form.

Copy of your business registration.

Document on environmental management system or certified certificate on environmental management system.

Document on source of supply and environment protection control measures.

A general description and relevant certificating documents on the safety, hygiene, environmental protection, and quality of scrap materials exported to China within the past three years.

Organizational structure, responsibilities of departments and job positions.

An undertaking to abide by the technical regulations on environmental protection, applicable environmental protection controls standards and the relevant laws and regulations of China.

Information on permanent office and processing locations (must show floor plans).

Certificates relating to type, quantity, and environmental quality of commodity.

Quality control management system and relevant technical personnel (including control over dangerous waste, contaminated waste and arrangement on discarded waste).

Verification and acceptance system for raw materials.

Measurement and equipment calibration system.

Rules on control over substandard commodity.

Staff training program.

Undertaking on control over environmental quality of goods.

Undertaking on bearing the cost incurred in the disposal of goods failing to meet environmental quality requirements.

Text of Chinese environmental control standards, directories on items prohibited from import and directories of hazardous waste materials

Looking to purchase plastic scrap to export to China? The first thing you need to ask is if the seller has an AQSIQ certificate. If the seller is AQSIQ certified, you won’t have to worry about renting one. Yes, there are AQSIQ certificates out for rent for a small fee. While the Chinese government forbids renting out the AQSIQ certificate, it’s part of the plastic scrap trade and happens on a daily basis.

Please note that AQSIQ certified sellers are usually very established in selling to Chinese buyers. Most of the time, they have an email list of Chinese buyers and manufacturers waiting to bid on their plastics (which means high prices!).

An alternative to shipping to China is Hong Kong. Hong Kong is an open port which requires no documentation for importing or exporting. Plus, there is no customs duty. In fact, most of my business has now moved to Hong Kong. Buyers in Hong Kong typically do not process recycled plastics (due to high wages), it usually ends up being resold to buyers or manufacturers in Guang Dong (a neighboring province in China).

If China is your final destination, there are logistic companies in Hong Kong that can forward your containers into China. They will take care of the AQSIQ rental and CCIC inspection for you.

Advancements in the technological world make it necessary to replace computers every three or four years. It is not always easy to find a business which specializes in computer disposal to remove the unused units. If they are just tossed in a dumpster they become quite a large problem for the environment. There are a couple of choices that work well when the old computer systems have to go to make room for new, updated equipment.

The first option would be to find a business which specializes in computer disposal services. This can be a relatively inexpensive operation. It will also save the environment a lot of waste that cannot be broken down. The disposal service has a couple of options. They may rebuild computers and be able to use the old computers for parts and repairs. They may then be resold or donated for charitable services.

Another option is computer demanufacturing. This is an involved process which basically breaks the computer down into parts which can be used or recycled. There are many pieces of metal or plastic which can be baled and taken to a recycling center. This can generate an extra income from the parts. Metals are many times purchased by large companies and reused.

There are about five different plastics used in the manufacturing of computers. These plastics can be separated out when a computer is demanufactured. Different types of wires can be sorted out as well. Metals can be separated into three categories: steel, aluminum and copper. All of these are reusable.

Whether the company takes on the task of demanufacturing computers or hire a computer disposal company the environment is benefited. Before just throwing away old computers, be sure to explore all the possible options. Choosing the right option can make a major difference in saving the environment.

Peter is a writer who spends his time doing research on different topics and posting articles about them. His main focus right now is in environmental issues including, Computer Disposal and Computer Disposal Services.
