Respect The Oceans For A Sustainable Tomorrow

With all of the recent talk about protecting the oceans, it is now more important than ever to make sure that the choices that those of us who live on the land are making are not adversely affecting those who are living in the ocean. There are a number of things that can be done in order to ensure that this is taking place. The most important thing to do is making sure that you are using your purchasing power to support businesses and fisheries that are making the sustainable choice. Despite all of the conservation laws that are on the books, there are still practices that are used which damage the oceans and destroy fisheries. In order to get around that, it is important to make sure that you are choosing sustainable products.

While everyone should write to their representative and senator about enacting tougher conservation laws, the truth of the matter is that much of the damage has already been done. There is a great amount of damage that gets done to the oceans with the usage of industrial fishing techniques. Many fish and other sea creatures find that their habitats are being destroyed. This is something that can lead to extinction. In order to be able to have the same seafood be around for future generations it is important to make sure that we are taking actions that are sustainable and do not allow for bad practices to continue negatively affecting the oceans. Consumers need to begin to make the shift to picking seafood that was harvested or raised in a manner that helps the oceans to rebuild instead of destroying them.

The good news is that there are more and more options for sustainable seafood for folks who want to be eating from the sea in a responsible manner. The next time that you throw a dinner party at your house, make sure that you pick seafood that is sustainable. If your guests ask, make sure to mention that you are serving a meal that has been sustainably harvested, and ask them to do their part in helping to ensure that the wildlife of the oceans are able to continue living in the way that they have always lived. Until we get the conservation laws that we deserve-ones with teeth that get enforced all of the time-it is important to make the choice of sustainable seafood.

It’s up to us to protect the planet. Check out the sustainability tips from the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute. Alaska’s fishermen have a long tradition of effective resource management to ensure that generations to come can enjoy fresh seafood.
